PTCB CPhT workflow

Eight controlled steps from eligibility to employment.

  1. 1
    Check state requirements

Determine whether registration, trainee status, background checks or approved education are required before work.

  2. 2
Qualify through training or 500 hours

Use a PTCB-recognized program or completed equivalent work experience.

  3. 3
Create the PTCB account and apply

Use your exact legal name, disclose required criminal and board actions, and request accommodations during application.

  4. 4
    Pay $129 and receive authorization

The standard authorization period is 90 days.

  5. 5
    Schedule with Pearson VUE

Select an available authorized testing location and verify ID requirements.

  6. 6
    Take the 90-question PTCE

Use 1 hour 50 minutes for 80 scored and 10 unidentified unscored questions.

  7. 7
Verify the official score and certification

Passing scale is 1,400; official results typically appear within three weeks.

  8. 8
    Complete state and employer requirements

National certification does not replace state registration, licensure or employer onboarding.
